Chapter Five

Indie

After a fan-fuckingtastic trip at Labelle’s Salon, I pulled into the parking space next to Anson and Archie, my insides fluttering with nerves. It had been so nice of the two men to show up and support me while I used my voucher, especially since I had never met Archie. What I’d expected to be a simple haircut had turned into a fun, pampering experience that left me feeling pretty and confident. Going to Takoda Outreach Center was starting to feel like the best decision I’d ever made.

Their offer to bring me here to meet my future employer was even more above and beyond. And now it was time. The Tap Tavern. Through those doors was my future. What if they didn't like me? What if Archie had been wrong and the other waiters or the managers found my brightly colored hair and nails offensive? No, the cute redhead wouldn't set me up for failure. Kindness radiated from his every word and gesture. Buck up, Indie, this was another step toward getting my life on track and finally being able to take care of myself alone. I could—I would—do this.

Getting out of my car, I gave a little wave to the two men waiting patiently for me. Anson’s answering smile was soft. "It's a little nerve-racking, isn't it? Starting over somewhere new."

I swallowed. “I'd like to say it'll be a piece of cake, no problem. But, honestly, I'm shaking in my britches.”

Laughter bubbled up out of Archie's mouth. "At least you're honest."

Shrugging, I said, "No point in lying."

Anson grinned. "You'll be fine, and if you decide you hate waiting tables, I’ll find you something else.”

The reassurance that I wouldn’t be stuck here soothed my nerves, but I didn’t want to fail. Anson didn’t know me, and I couldn’t depend on him to find me something else. If I nailed this and got it right, what I made in tips would hopefully be more than enough to help me finally save some money.

"One of my best friends is the general manager, and I worked here for years. I'm telling you, it's a great place to find your footing,” Archie said.

With that, the three of us entered the building. The first person I saw was a lumbering man with a sweet as hell beard standing by the door. Archie went straight for him and the man opened his arms, pulling him into a hug. I could tell the larger man was holding the smaller one gently. Anson pointed over at him. "That's Ollie. He's been the bouncer here forever."

Ollie let Archie go and gazed at me curiously. Archie gestured between us. "Ollie, this is Indie. He's a new waiter."

Ollie's lips tipped up at the corners in a friendly smirk. "Welcome to The Tap Tavern. We definitely need the help."

"Come on, there’s my brother. He works here, too,” Archie said before calling out, “Julian.”

Two men turned around, and I instantly knew which one was Archie’s brother. While he dwarfed him, his brother,
